Two upcoming community information sessions will let Cayuga County residents learn more about a proposed plan to protect Cayuga Lake.

The Cayuga County Water and Sewer Authority (CCWSA)will host two informational meetings on the proposed Cayuga Lake Protection plan, allowing residents to learn more about the plan and ask questions. The first meeting is scheduled for May 5, and the second is scheduled for June 2; both meetings will take place at 7:00p at the Southern Cayuga School cafeteria, 2384 Route 35 B, Aurora.

The CCWSA said each session will include a brief presentation and Q&A session, with information displays available and a chance to speak directly with experts.

The plan would form a new sewer district, see a new low-pressure sewer system installed along approximately nine miles of the lake’s shoreline in the Town of Ledyard and Genoa. Wastewater from homes within the new district would go to the Village of Aurora’s wastewater treatment plant for treatment, officials said.

Citing increased algal blooms on the lake, the CCWSA said the projects will protect the lake’s health by reducing potential pollutants entering the lake.
Following the information sessions, residents within the proposed district will vote in a referendum on the matter scheduled for June 23.
More information on the plan can be found on the CCWSA’s website.
