A program exploring the history of the Seneca Knitting Mill and the historical novel “Women of Glass and Steel” will take place Saturday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Becker Mansion in Seneca Falls.

Jonathan Monfiletto, Executive Director of the Seneca Falls Historical Society, will share the history of the Seneca Knitting Mill, detailing its more than 150 years of operation and its ongoing impact on the community and people of Seneca Falls.

Author Mary Lash will discuss the real locations and characters, some of whom are real, featured in her historical novel “Women of Glass and Steel.” Lash will also explain how the community of Seneca Falls, both past and present, has influenced her life and writing.

Lash’s novel is set in Seneca Falls in 1916 and follows Della (Delfina Pereira), who works in a knitting mill and lives with her mother, described as the town’s most outspoken suffragist. The book’s description states Della “wants only to find love and escape Mama’s unpopular opinions and the foreign ways that make her immigrant family so different.”

The program will be held in the dining room of the Becker Mansion, located at 55 Cayuga St. in Seneca Falls. Admission is $8 for Seneca Falls Historical Society members and $10 for nonmembers. Advance registration is welcome but not required.
