Rain chances build quietly — a wetter stretch is on the way

A lone patch of light drizzle is sitting over Geneva at 6 PM while the rest of the region wraps up a pleasant Tuesday under mainly clear skies — and that contrast tells the story of what’s coming. The evening hours should stay dry for most of the Finger Lakes, but NWS Buffalo is watching a mid-level shortwave crossing Lake Erie overnight that will pull moisture and forcing into the region after midnight. Rain chances climb steadily from there.

Tonight’s low dips to around 52° in Geneva and Auburn, with cooler readings down to 47° in Bath and Corning — comfortable sleeping weather but no frost concern. Wednesday brings a warmer, muggier feel with highs near 76°, scattered showers possible, and an isolated thunderstorm can’t be ruled out.

The real story is Wednesday night into Thursday. A strong area of low pressure arrives, bringing the best chance for widespread showers and thunderstorms of the week, along with wind gusts that NWS has flagged as notable — winds could top 20 mph Thursday. Precip chances Thursday sit at 85%. The region dries back out Friday into the weekend, with highs holding in the low 70s through Sunday.
