New York State Police have released additional details following an early Saturday morning crash on the Southern State Parkway that injured a trooper and another driver.
According to investigators, the operator of the Jeep involved in the crash was traveling at an unsafe speed and failed to move over for a marked police vehicle that was assisting with traffic control. During the investigation, the driver told troopers she was distracted while adjusting her boot and socks inside the vehicle at the time of the collision.
The crash happened around 5:43 a.m. on the eastbound side of the parkway just west of Exit 14. Troopers had positioned a marked patrol vehicle to assist with hazardous roadway conditions when, at approximately 5:47 a.m., a gray Jeep Wrangler struck the rear of the police vehicle.
Police say the impact pushed the patrol car from the right lane across the center and left lanes. The Jeep then left the roadway and came to rest on the right shoulder.
Both the trooper and the Jeep operator sustained non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released from the hospital.
