An investigation is underway after an incarcerated man died following a fire inside a cell at Eastern Correctional Facility.

New York State Police said the fire broke out at approximately 1:40 a.m. Saturday. Correctional facility employees extinguished the flames and found 35-year-old Marcos Alcaraz inside the cell.

Alcaraz was taken to Ellenville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The circumstances surrounding the fire and Alcaraz’s death have not been released.

The investigation involves the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision’s Office of Special Investigations, the Ulster County Medical Examiner’s Office and the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

The New York State Attorney General’s Office was also notified and responded to the prison.
