On Saturday, Cayuga County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Cato man following a reported order of protection violation.

Deputies responded to a residence in the Town of Cato at approximately 10 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting that a protected party was inside a home with 56-year-old Daniel Root. Upon arrival, Root allegedly told deputies that only he and a friend were inside the house and denied knowing the whereabouts of the protected party.

During the investigation, the protected party, who is the subject of a full stay-away order of protection, approached the door and identified herself.

Root was arrested and charged with criminal contempt in the second degree and aggravated family offense. He was transported to the Public Safety Building for processing and later taken to the Cayuga County Jail for centralized arraignment. On Sunday, Root was arraigned, and bail was set at $25,000 cash or a $50,000 bond.

The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police reports are automatically removed from this site after 90 days.
