Michael Lane, Tompkins County’s longest-serving elected official, has announced he will retire from the county legislature at the end of his term in December. By that time, Lane will have served approximately 28 years, representing the villages of Dryden and Freeville.
Lane shared the news during Tuesday night’s Tompkins County Legislature meeting. Before his tenure at the county level, he spent 12 years in village government, serving as both the mayor of Dryden and a member of the village council.
Lane is a lifelong resident of the Village and Town of Dryden and an attorney. He is a graduate of Dryden Central School. He earned his B.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and his J.D. from the University of Akron, School of Law. He established a civil practice in Dryden Village in 1979. He is active in his community, serving as Trustee and Secretary of The Southworth Library Association, and is a charter member of the Dryden Sertoma Club. He has been a member of the Dryden Lake Park Committee, the Dryden Bicentennial and Fountain Committees, and the Timex Square Park Committee. He chaired the Dryden-Freeville Wastewater Study Commission, which helped plan the sewer system and wastewater plant in Freeville and upgrade of the Dryden wastewater treatment plant.
