A new addition has quietly made its appearance on the main campus of the Saunders Finger Lakes Museum in Branchport.
Standing tall in the backscape of the campus, this heron sculpture was carefully crafted by local, renowned artist Sam Castner of Ironvine Studios. After an initial visit to the property, Castner was inspired to create the 14-foot structure as a heron “starting its leap of faith, surrounded by large reeds and cattails.” The self–supported freestanding structure guides visitors to the newly installed EZ Dock, made possible in part by generous donors, Tom and Carolyn Argust.
Longtime museum supporters, the Argusts believe that “giving to this cause allows us to help support the present while laying a foundation and developing a legacy for future generations” noting that they are “very excited to be part of something so impactful.” The donation arose after a visit to the museum and the existing kayak and canoe launch, which they felt personally compelled to support due to their enjoyment of the sport of paddling. Their generous donation made the new, accessible dock a reality.
This stable dock has significantly enhanced kayaking experiences for program participants and the sculpture guides visitors to the dock. The shoreline of Sugar Creek, located on the museum’s property, has been home to many sightings of Great Blue Herons. This sculpture masterfully depicts the serene moment just before the heron takes off, inviting visitors to connect with the tranquil beauty of the site.
