As wildfire impacts become more noticeable in the Northeast, a regional organization is hosting a discussion aimed at helping local communities better understand and prepare for the risks.
Sustainable Finger Lakes will host a virtual panel on Wednesday at noon focused on wildfire trends, health impacts, and mitigation strategies in the Finger Lakes region. Register for the webinar by clicking here
While wildfires have traditionally been associated with western states, recent events have highlighted their growing relevance closer to home. In June 2023, smoke from Canadian wildfires led to unhealthy air quality across New York. The following year, extended dry conditions contributed to wildfires in the Northeast that burned more than 5,000 acres across New York and New Jersey.
Organizers say the event will provide insight into how climate change is influencing wildfire frequency and intensity in the region, as well as what steps communities can take to prepare.
The panel will feature Flavio Lehner, who will discuss wildfire trends in the Northeast; Alistair Hayden, who will address health impacts related to wildfire smoke; and Christina Rust, who will outline strategies for reducing wildfire risk in homes and communities.
The webinar is part of the Finger Lakes Forecast series, launched in 2022 to explore how climate change is affecting the region and to provide actionable information for residents and local leaders. Previous discussions have examined topics such as the impact of artificial intelligence data centers on local communities.
Organizers say local officials, planning boards, and fire departments are especially encouraged to attend.
