The Bloomfield Public Library has completed a new accessibility initiative designed to create a more inclusive and sensory-friendly environment for community members.

The project was funded through a grant from the OWWL Library System, with additional support from the library’s Friends of the Library group. The initiative focused on improving youth spaces with resources and furnishings intended to support individuals with sensory sensitivities, neurodivergent needs and diverse learning styles.

New additions include flexible seating in the children’s room, light tables, noise-canceling headphones, tactile and sensory toys, fluorescent light covers, alternative lighting options and soft play equipment. The library also added early literacy and dyslexia kits to its Library of Things collection.

An Augmentative and Alternative Communication Board has also been installed near the circulation desk to assist visitors with alternative communication needs.

In addition to the physical upgrades, all library staff participated in an accessibility and inclusion workshop led by Rochester Accessible Adventures.

“We are pleased to see the work Bloomfield Public Library is doing to become an inclusive environment for its community members,” said Anita O’Brien, executive director of Rochester Accessible Adventures. “The time we spent together in the workshop training made it clear that the team is investing in building their toolkit of knowledge so they can continue to remove barriers for people with disabilities who may not already be using the library’s services.”

Library Director Rachael Aycock said the project reflects the library’s commitment to making its programs and services accessible to everyone.

“Libraries should be spaces where everyone feels comfortable and included,” Aycock said. “We are grateful for the support that made this initiative possible and excited to continue expanding accessibility for families and library patrons in our community.”

Community members are encouraged to visit the library to explore the new sensory-friendly resources and learn more about the accessibility tools now available.
