Work is underway at the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office to receive accreditation for its civil division.

Speaking on FLX Morning, Sheriff Brian Schenck said the office is working to receive accreditation for its civil division through a voluntary program of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association. To achieve the accreditation, Schenck said the division would need to meet “121 specific standards covering personnel management, fiscal operation, record management, and civil law enforcement.”

“And to boil that down, it basically would indicate that we are following the most current best practices within that division and working under current and sound policies and procedures,” Said Schenck.

With only six months left before he retires from the sheriff’s office, Schenck hopes it will be one of the last major initiatives he’ll accomplish while sheriff.

“I think we can make that happen,” continued Schenck.

If the civil division receives accreditation, Schenck added that it would be the third of the office’s four divisions to achieve accreditation, with the road patrol and jail divisions already accredited.
