Finger Lakes 4-H youth delivered a strong showing at the New York State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl and Livestock Quiz Bowl competitions held Sunday at Cornell University.
Participants representing Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H were among those competing, with several individuals and teams earning top finishes.
In Dairy Quiz Bowl competition, the Finger Lakes Junior Team placed second overall. Abigail Freier also turned in an impressive individual performance, finishing third in the junior division.
The Finger Lakes Senior Dairy Quiz Bowl Team placed third. Josiah Freier earned second place individually in the senior division following a three-question tiebreaker for first.
Freier also competed in Livestock Quiz Bowl, where his Finger Lakes team captured first place. He placed third overall as an individual in that competition.
With his performance, Freier has qualified to compete at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Kentucky, where he will represent New York as both a team member and individual participant in national Quiz Bowl contests.
Organizers say the competitions require extensive preparation and knowledge in animal science, with local participation made possible through the support of dedicated volunteers.
Special recognition was given to program volunteers Dr. Grace Maria Freier and Dr. Dale Freier II for their leadership and efforts in mentoring youth and encouraging participation in Seneca County 4-H programs.
