A historic portrait of George Washington has returned to public display at the New York State Capitol following an extensive conservation project completed ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

State officials on Thursday celebrated the return of the 1813 oil painting, created by renowned Albany artist Ezra Ames. The portrait is once again on display in the Capitol’s State Street Lobby after undergoing a specialized restoration led by the New York State Office of General Services (OGS).

The painting, which has been displayed publicly since it was commissioned more than 200 years ago, had deteriorated over time due to age. Conservators repaired fading, discoloration, chipping, and oxidation to restore the artwork’s original appearance while preserving its historical significance.

OGS Commissioner Jeanette Moy said the restoration reflects the state’s commitment to preserving New York’s history as the country prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

The portrait was painted by Ezra Ames, one of Albany’s most prominent early 19th-century artists. Ames based the work on Gilbert Stuart’s famous 1796 Lansdowne Portrait of George Washington. During his career, Ames completed more than 400 portraits, including paintings of several New York political leaders that are also displayed in the Capitol.

The conservation work was performed by the Williamstown + Atlanta Art Conservation Centers, whose specialists stabilized the oil-on-canvas painting and carefully treated areas damaged by centuries of aging.

The New York State Museum also praised the restoration, noting the portrait remains an important piece of the state’s collection documenting the nation’s founding and will continue to be accessible to lawmakers, visitors, and the public.

OGS oversees the preservation and conservation of numerous state-owned art collections, including the Empire State Plaza Art Collection and the Harlem Art Collection.

The restored George Washington portrait is now on display as part of the Capitol’s free weekday tours. The 45-minute guided tours are offered year-round at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m., departing from the State Street Lobby. Additional Friday evening Capitol tours and walking tours of the Empire State Plaza are available through the end of August. Reservations are not required for individuals or small groups.
