Elmira Police are investigating an early morning shooting that left one man wounded and led officers to recover a firearm.
According to the Elmira Police Department, officers responded at approximately 1:31 a.m. on Wednesday to the area of East Second Street and High Street following reports of multiple gunshots.
When officers arrived, they found evidence that a shooting had occurred, including spent shell casings. Investigators also located an unoccupied vehicle on East Third Street that had been struck by gunfire and was involved in a motor vehicle accident. Police recovered a firearm from the vehicle.
Several hours later, officers monitoring the area observed two men return to the scene. During a traffic stop, police discovered that one of the men had suffered a gunshot wound. Authorities said the man declined medical treatment and did not cooperate with investigators.
Police said no other victims have been identified.
The investigation remains active. The Elmira Police Department was assisted by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office and the West Elmira Police Department.
