A 16-year-old adolescent offender was arrested following an incident earlier this month at Penn Yan Academy.

Penn Yan Police said the arrest stems from an incident on May 12 involving a verbal altercation between two students at the school.Β  During an attempt by the school resource officer to de-escalate the situation, authorities allege the adolescent offender became involved in a physical altercation with the officer and also punched another staff member.

The juvenile was charged with two counts of attempted second-degree assault, both Class E felonies, and one count of obstructing governmental administration, a Class A misdemeanor.

The adolescent offender was processed at the Penn Yan Police Department and later arraigned in Yates County Youth Part Court. Police said the juvenile was released on their own recognizance and turned over to a guardian.

Because of the defendant’s age, police did not release additional identifying information.

The fact that a person has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
