Several historic one-room schoolhouses across the Finger Lakes will open their doors to the public later this month as part of a regional open house tour celebrating the area’s educational heritage.

The One-Room School House Open House Tour will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, featuring preserved schoolhouses in Geneva, Penn Yan, Rushville, and the Midlakes region.  The event is part of the National Schoolhouse Conference, “Fine, Finer and Finest Schools of the Finger Lakes,” scheduled for Sunday through Tuesday.  Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the historic buildings and learn about the role one-room schoolhouses played in educating generations of rural students throughout the Finger Lakes.

The conference and open house tour are hosted by the Country School Association of America, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting historic rural schoolhouses.

Organizers say the event offers a unique chance to experience an important piece of local history while highlighting ongoing efforts to preserve these historic educational landmarks for future generations.
