U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs To Visit Seneca County for Memorial Day

The honorable Denis R. McDonough, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, will be the keynote speaker at the Memorial Day Observances at the New York State Veterans Cemetery – Finger Lakes.

McDonough was nominated by President Biden to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs. Mr. McDonough’s nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 8th, 2021, and he was sworn in the following day as the 11th Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Secretary McDonough served in the Obama Administration as the 26th White House Chief of Staff from February 2013 to January 2017.

The New York State Veterans Cemetery – Finger Lakes formerly known as the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery occupies 162 acres along Seneca Lake in Romulus, Seneca County, and is adjacent to Sampson State Park.

The Cemetery is located at the site of the former Sampson Naval Training Station and Sampson Air Force Base, where hundreds of thousands of service members trained during World War II and the Korean War. The site later functioned as a temporary college and a separation center for service members being discharged, and officially closed in 2000.

The Memorial Day service at the New York State Veterans Cemetery is Monday, May 27th at 2:30.
