Flint Creek is showing signs of recovery after a massive warehouse fire in Gorham, but the DEC says residents should still stay away.
DEC officials tell News 8 in Rochester that the water quality is improving, and no new dead or stressed fish have been detected. Cleanup and monitoring continue, and the recreational advisory remains in effect.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), working with the state Department of Health, announced the advisory on September 3rd as part of its ongoing response to the August 30 fire at the Eco Operations facility in Gorham.
Until further notice, the public is urged to avoid all contact with Flint Creek through the Canandaigua Outlet — including fishing, boating, swimming, and fish consumption.
DEC says field teams are monitoring water quality and assessing impacts to aquatic life. There has been no indication of impacts on public drinking water supplies.
Officials are encouraging residents to report unusual fish or wildlife observations by calling DEC at 800-457-7362.
