Police will be allowed to install surveillance cameras at three new locations around the city of Canandaigua. City Council voted this week to approve the measure that would see a $115,000 state technology grant awarded to help pay for the installation of cameras along Lakeshore Drive, at Kershaw Park, and at the City Pier.
Police Chief Mathew Nielsen said the cameras will be used as a crime prevention tool designed to analyze traffic concerns and accidents, plus assist with follow-up investigations.
City Manager John Goodwin added that cameras downtown at the request of the BID have helped with criminal investigations.
To help guard against privacy concerns, Chief Nielsen said the cameras would be pointed at the boat docks and roadways rather than swimming areas.
