The Harmful Algal Bloom’s season started earlier than ever this year on Seneca Lake.
According to the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association, numerous blooms were reported starting on July 28th. Through August 3rd, 13 HABS had been confirmed on the lake. The majority of blooms were up and down the east side of the lake. A map showing the location of the blooms can be found here
This year Pure Waters expanded its text alert system to include a text when a confirmed HAB is reported. This service is intended to notify people that HABs are present on the lake, and everyone should be on the lookout for HABs in their area. CLICK HERE to sign up for text alerts.
Keep in mind that HABs can form anywhere on the lake, whether it be along the shoreline or out in the middle of the lake, and generally form on calm days. If you believe you’ve spotted a bloom, please snap a quick photo and email it to [email protected] along with your location.
You can also call the HABs Hotline at 1-800-220-1609.
