The Cayuga Lake Watershed Network will hold a Community Conference next week to shine a spotlight on the challenges posed by Harmful Algal Blooms and what actions are being taken to combat them.
The 2025 Community Conference in Canoga will take place from 3:30-6:00p on Wednesday at the Canoga Fire Hall (3576 NY 89, Seneca Falls).
The free event will feature presentations, providing insights into the latest trends and tools for monitoring blooms and approaches to improving water quality throughout the Fingerlakes.

2024 Cayuga Lake Harmful Algal Bloom Season in Review: Earliest, Latest, and Most Blooms Ever” Alyssa Johnson, Cayuga Lake Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring Program Coordinator, Community Science Institute
“Can We Use Satellites to Identify Harmful Algal Blooms in the Finger Lakes?” Dr. Lewis McCaffrey, Research Scientist, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Water, Finger Lakes Watershed Program
“Microbial Source-Tracking: An Evidence-Based Approach to Improving Cayuga Lake Water Quality” Dr. Michael Schummer, Assistant Professor, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Department of Environmental Biology
Presentations will be followed by pizza and networking at 6:00p. While the event is free, registration is requested and can be done at www.cayugalake.org.
Cayuga Lake Watershed Network hosts two community conferences per year; a spring/summer conference is held in either Cayuga or Seneca Counties, and a fall/winter conference in Tompkins County.
