An Auburn man has been convicted of a 2022 murder on Grant Ave.

Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci announced on Thursday that 62-year-old Daniel Nachtsheim has been found guilty of second-degree murder, rejecting his insanity defense.

“This was one of the most difficult and tragic cases to prosecute. While the defendant has a long history of severe mental health issues, mental illness alone does not meet the legal standard for criminal insanity. The evidence established that the defendant did not satisfy the criteria necessary for a finding of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. We offer our sincere condolences to the victim’s family and appreciate their patience throughout this process,” said DA Antonacci.

Antonacci said that on August 6, 2022, Nachtsheim murdered the victim at 49 Grant Ave by inflicting blunt force injuries and stabbing him multiple times in the face, head, and neck with scissors.

Antonacci added that Nachtsheim’s admissions and evidence, such as leaving behind a shoe at the crime scene and finding the victim’s blood on his clothing, led to the guilty verdict.

When sentenced in April, Nachtsheim faces 25 years to life in prison.
