May 2nd UPDATE:
The individual shot by Canandaigua Police Monday afternoon has been identified. 34-year-old Thomas Johnson is at Strong Memorial Hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Police also offered up some additional details on Monday’s incident. Officers were called to the 7-Eleven on South Main Street for a suspicious person complaint. When officers encountered Johnson in an attempt to interview him, he pulled out what appeared to be a handgun from his front jacket pocket. Police ordered Johnson to show his hands, but he refused and started to walk towards South Main Street. Officers attempted to discharge their tasers without effect. As they continued to talk with Johnson, officers said that is when the suspect removed the handgun from his pocket and pointed it at an officer. A Canandaigua officer then discharged his firearm, striking Johnson.
An investigation determined the gun Johnson displayed was an Airsoft pistol. Johnson has been charged with menacing and was issued an appearance ticket.
