With warmer weather bringing more e-bikes and e-scooters onto local roads and trails, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is reminding riders to understand the rules before heading out.

The Sheriff’s Office recently released a safety guide outlining New York State laws and regulations governing the operation of electric bicycles and electric scooters. Officials say they have seen an increase in calls related to e-bikes and e-scooters and want to help riders stay safe while sharing roads, bike lanes, and trails with motorists and pedestrians.

According to the guide, e-bike and e-scooter operators must be at least 16 years old. Riders are granted many of the same rights and responsibilities as bicyclists and motorists under state law.

The Sheriff’s Office notes that helmets are recommended for all riders. However, helmets are required for 16- and 17-year-olds operating an e-scooter.

Riders are also reminded that e-bikes and e-scooters should use bike lanes whenever possible and cannot operate on roads with speed limits greater than 30 miles per hour. Sidewalk riding is generally prohibited unless specifically authorized by a local law or ordinance.

Other regulations highlighted by the Sheriff’s Office include requirements for proper lighting after sunset. E-bikes must be equipped with a white front light and a red rear light when operated at night.

Officials also stressed that local municipalities have the authority to establish additional regulations regarding e-bike and e-scooter use, including restrictions on where they may be operated and whether additional safety equipment is required.

For those using trails and bike paths, the Sheriff’s Office recommends checking with local municipalities or park authorities, as regulations can vary by location.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to operate e-bikes and e-scooters responsibly and to familiarize themselves with applicable state and local laws before riding.
