A 59-year-old man was killed and a Penn Yan man was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Thursday in the town of Torrey, according to New York State Police.

State Police in Dundee say the crash happened June 5 at about 11:39 a.m. on State Route 54.

A 1999 white Sterling dump truck, driven by a 38-year-old Penn Yan man, was traveling eastbound when it braked abruptly after encountering a vehicle ahead that was preparing to make a left turn, according to investigators.

Troopers said the driver of that vehicle was able to accelerate and avoid a collision. However, the dump truck then crossed into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming 2015 Chevrolet Silverado.

The driver and sole occupant of the Silverado, a 59-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dump truck driver was ejected in the crash. He was transported to Geneva General Hospital and later flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Officials said he sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized. A preliminary breath test was negative.

State Police say members of the Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to assist with the investigation.

The roadway has since reopened. The crash remains under investigation by the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
