A Newfield man has been sentenced to state prison after pleading guilty to attempting to use a counterfeit bill at a Schuyler County store.

John Chaffee, 38, pleaded guilty on March 26 in Schuyler County Court to attempted criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, a Class E felony.Β  Judge Matthew C. Hayden sentenced Chaffee to 1Β½ to 3 years in state prison. He was sentenced as a second felony offender.

According to prosecutors, the charge stems from an incident on November 24, 2024, when Chaffee attempted to purchase items at the Dollar General in Montour Falls using a counterfeit $100 bill.

The case was investigated by the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department and prosecuted by Schuyler County District Attorney Jeremy Hourihan.
