Touting a decade of investment, redevelopment, and infrastructure improvements that he says have transformed the Wayne County village, Newark Mayor Jonathan Taylor has announced he will seek a fourth term in office.
Taylor, who has served as mayor since 2014 after two years as a village trustee, formally announced his re-election campaign this week.
“Newark is not the same village it was 10 years ago, and 10 years from now it won’t look like it does today,” Taylor said in a press release. “That’s not an accident. That’s what happens when a community decides to believe in itself and does the work.”
Taylor said the village has secured more than $43 million in grant funding during his tenure, helping support projects aimed at improving infrastructure, expanding housing opportunities, and enhancing quality of life.
Among the accomplishments he highlighted was the opening of the new Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham on East Union Street in June 2025. The hotel brought more than a dozen jobs to the community and provided lodging options for visitors, businesses, and Erie Canal travelers.
Taylor also pointed to continued commercial growth in the village, including the opening of a Taco Bell and other business investments.
A major focus of the mayor’s announcement was Newark’s $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative award. Taylor said projects funded through the program are continuing to move forward, including the redevelopment of Coventry Commons on Harrison Street. The project will convert a former manufacturing facility into 101 affordable apartments and is currently under construction.
A lifelong Newark resident, Taylor graduated from Newark High School and earned a degree in animal science from Cornell University. He works as a feed manager at a local dairy farm and lives in Newark with his wife, Cari, and their two children.
Village elections are scheduled for next year.
