New York State Police have released additional information following a chaotic early Sunday morning incident in Onondaga County that left two people dead and two others injured.
Authorities have identified the driver of the 2016 Subaru involved in the incident as 46-year-old Irene McIntyre of East Syracuse. Investigators say McIntyre struck multiple people before being involved in an officer-involved shooting.
The trooper who discharged their weapon has been identified as Trooper Michael A. Sharshon, who has served with the New York State Police for more than four years and is assigned to the SP LaFayette barracks. He has been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard procedure.
State Police also identified the deceased victim as 79-year-old Cheryl Miron of Fayetteville, who was struck during the incident.
Officials say the encounter was captured on body-worn cameras, but the footage will not be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
The incident began around 1:37 a.m. Sunday on Shute Road in the Town of LaFayette, where troopers responded to reports of a vehicle driving erratically through residential yards at a high rate of speed.
Investigators say McIntyre struck a female victim prior to police arrival. A male witness attempted to intervene by positioning his vehicle behind the Subaru, but authorities say McIntyre backed into his vehicle.
When troopers arrived, police say McIntyre continued operating the vehicle dangerously, striking the female victim again and hitting a second man who was trying to help. Authorities say she ignored repeated commands to stop.
A trooper then fired their service weapon, striking McIntyre, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. She was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where she later died.
The female victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two male victims were transported to Upstate University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident remains under investigation by the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The New York State Office of the Attorney General has been notified and responded to the scene.
