For the first time in the district’s 19 years of participation, a Geneva student competed on the national stage at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Geneva Middle School student Logan Yuan earned a spot at the prestigious event after winning the district spelling bee in January and advancing to claim the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES regional championship in March. Fellow Geneva Middle School student Maria Kaim also competed and finished third in the regional competition.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee brings together top student spellers from across the United States and several other countries, making qualification a significant achievement.

Logan’s appearance on the national stage marked a milestone for Geneva City Schools and capped months of preparation and competition.

Before he left for the event, Geneva Middle School students and staff gave Logan a celebratory sendoff. Students lined the hallways, cheering as he walked through the building wearing a crown and king’s mantle while carrying a staff topped with a bee. Along the way, classmates offered high-fives and words of encouragement.

In a statement released by the school, District Spelling Bee Coordinator Brenda Calabria said attending the national competition was an emotional experience for participants and their families. After Logan’s final round, she said he reflected on the challenge of competing under the pressure of a national audience.

Calabria said Logan recognized his final word, “tourin,” a French soup, but found the intensity of the competition difficult.

She added that academic competitions such as the spelling bee provide students with valuable opportunities to be recognized for their talents and accomplishments.

“Logan is a great student and an example of a grand human being. I am so proud of him,” Calabria said.

Logan’s achievement represents a historic first for Geneva schools and places him among the nation’s top young spellers.
