An early morning fire tore through a multi-unit home on North Street Sunday, leaving four people displaced and causing heavy damage to the structure.

Fire crews were called to 118 North St. around 4 a.m., where they encountered a working blaze that quickly escalated to three alarms, according to the Auburn Fire Department. The fire heavily damaged the second floor and roof of the home.

The bulk of the blaze was brought under control within about an hour, though crews remained on scene for several more hours. Auburn police and ambulance personnel assisted at the scene, and a portion of North Street was temporarily closed between Seymour and Cottage streets.

Officials say no residents or firefighters were injured. Four people living in an upstairs apartment were able to get out safely. A lower apartment in the building was unoccupied.

The displaced residents are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials said the home may be a total loss due to the extent of the damage.
