A former Auburn school administrator will be the next superintendent of the Onondaga Central School District.
The Onondaga Central School District Board of Education announced Wednesday that it has selected Robert Montgomery, currently an assistant superintendent in the Marcellus Central School District, to succeed retiring Superintendent Rob Price.
Montgomery has ties to Cayuga County through several education leadership roles. Before joining Marcellus in 2017, he worked in the Auburn Enlarged City School District as director of secondary curriculum and later as principal of William H. Seward Elementary School. He also served as an instructional coach at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES and taught middle school in Auburn earlier in his career.
The appointment follows a five-month national search that included community surveys and interviews with district stakeholders. The search was conducted with assistance from Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES.
Onondaga Board of Education President Mike Kobasa said the board is confident Montgomery will provide strong leadership for the district.
“This process reflected the importance of community voice, transparency, and collaboration,” Kobasa said in a news release. “We appreciate the engagement we received, are grateful for the strong pool of candidates, and are confident in the direction of our district as we move forward together.”
Montgomery currently serves as assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction, data and assessment in Marcellus, a position he has held since July 2024.
“To hear students describe the district as a caring community with a vibrant sense of family tells me everything I need to know about the soul of Onondaga Central,” Montgomery said.
Montgomery earned an associate’s degree in business administration from Jefferson Community College and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education from SUNY Oswego. He also earned a Certificate of Advanced Study from SUNY Oswego in 2012.
He will take over leadership of the Onondaga district following Rob Price’s retirement on July 10. Price has served as superintendent for the past 13 years.
