Transfer Ready Inmates Present Challenge for Cayuga Co. Jail

SHARE NOW

Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck wants the state to do something about the backlog of inmates at the county jail awaiting transfer to state prisons. The Sheriff tells the Citizen there are about 25 of the so-called transfer ready inmates at the jail. He says that’s putting a burden on the understaffed jails. The backlog was caused by the strike by corrections officers earlier this year and the firing of officers following the strike. Scheck says the 100 dollars per inmate per day the jail receives from the state isn’t enough to cover the cost of housing them. The state says it’s working on speeding up the transfers.
