Testing Confirms Asbestos in Basement of Cayuga County Office Building

SHARE NOW

New testing at the Cayuga County Office Building has revealed asbestos in the building’s basement.  The news comes almost a year after the Auburn building was closed due to vermiculite contamination on its upper floors.

At this week’s Legislature meeting, Chairman Jonathan Anna said asbestos was found in the area housing the county’s backup 911 center and IT equipment. Initial tests conducted last summer showed no signs of contamination; however, Anna ordered additional testing earlier this year as plans progressed to remove equipment from the site.  During that testing, while the first floor remained clear, several basement samples tested positive for asbestos.

Legislators approved resolutions to appoint Campus Construction Management Group as the project manager for the office building and to allocate up to $150,000 for environmental services.
