The Falcons have arrived.
The Southern Cayuga Central School District has unveiled its new logo and mascot designs.
After the New York State Department of Education banned Native American imagery and mascots, the district was forced to retire its Chiefs mascot.
Community members had originally decided to call themselves The Cougars; however, the school board refused to approve the name change due to “a negative connotation associated with it.” This led the district back to the drawing board.
In November, district residents were able to vote on the top two contenders to be the next mascot – The Falcons and The Knights. The Falcons beat The Knights 555-305.
Following the vote, a committee was formed to collaborate with a graphic designer on the mascot’s appearance, ultimately leading to the new designs, which the district has stated will be gradually incorporated over the next several months, with the full implementation beginning on July 1.
