One local museum this weekend will celebrate the bicentennial of a Revolutionary War hero’s visit to Auburn.
The Seward House Museum, in partnership with the American Friends of Lafayette, will hold a free community event in its gardens to commemorate the 1825 visit by the Marquis de Lafayette to the city.
“We are honored to participate in this nationwide remembrance of Lafayette’s visit and legacy,” said Billye Chabot, Executive Director at the Seward House Museum. “His ideals of liberty, democracy, and international friendship resonate as deeply today as they did two hundred years ago.”
Festivities will begin at 3:30p with an approximately 30-minute concert featuring revolutionary-era music, followed by remarks and a performance by a Lafayette reenactor. From 4:30-5:30p, guests will also have a chance to tour the Seward House and view a travelling exhibit exploring Lafayette’s 1824-25 tour of the United States.
Lafayette was a French military officer who joined the Continental Army under General George Washington and helped secure victory in the American Revolution. Later, he also became a key figure during the French Revolution of 1789.
