Registration is now open for United Way of Cayuga County’s Fifth Annual Day of Caring.
Taking place on August 7, the event will see local residents volunteer their time and talents on a variety of projects at nonprofit agencies and community spaces (parks, libraries, etc) across the county. United Way of Cayuga County Executive Director Kathryn Dennis told Finger Lakes News Radio that, aside from helping complete necessary projects, volunteers also get to see the role these sites play in their community.
“It’s connecting our community members to places that serve our neighbors and our residents. There are some people who have lived here their whole lives and went to volunteer at a place for the first time and didn’t even know it was there… so it’s connecting our community residents to the place where we live.”
Both volunteers and potential projects will be able to register on Thursday. Registration information can be found on United Way’s website.
Last year’s Day of Caring saw nearly 220 volunteers complete 16 projects throughout the county, including those in Auburn, Aurora, Fair Haven, King Ferry, and Poplar Ridge. Dennis added that she hopes to see more project registrations take place in the north of the county this year.
In conjunction with the Day of Caring, United Way is also holding its annual youth drawing contest to design the logo that will be featured on the t-shirts worn by volunteers at the event. Designs must be submitted by May 19. More information on the contest can be found here.
