During Donate Life Month, one area politician is raising awareness about organ donations.

Assemblyman John Lemondes is encouraging residents in the 126th congressional district to consider registering as organ donors.

Citing Donate Life New York, Lemondes said that, in 2023, the Empire State ranked 50 out of 52 states and territories in total organ donor enrollment, and that nearly 8,000 New Yorkers are on the waiting list for a transplant.

“Organ donations are imperative for saving lives and Donate Life Month is the perfect time to bring awareness to this important issue. Thousands of New Yorkers are on the waiting list for a transplant, and every one of us has the power to help these people in need. I’m glad to have been a part of this bipartisan initiative, and I hope everyone considers registering as an organ donor to save lives across New York.”

The 126th consists of parts of Cayuga and Onondaga Counties, including Auburn, Weedsport, and Port Byron in Cayuga County, and Skaneateles, Camillus, Jordan, and Elbridge in Onondaga County.
