Could the Auburn Police Department get an armored rescue vehicle?

City council will hear a presentation from APD members at its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday regarding the potential acquisition of such a vehicle.

While armored and imposing, the department has stated the vehicle is not a military tank and has no weapons. Instead, it is an armored Ford truck designed to protect the occupants from small arms fire.

The department listed four types of events when such a vehicle could be deployed: a significant event (such as an active shooter situation), executing a high-risk warrant, a rescue event (storms, hurricanes), or during mass unrest. According to the APD, its armor makes it ideal for shootings, warrants, and mass unrest, while its off-road capability and high ground clearance make it well-suited for deployment during storms or natural disasters.

The department added that the acquisition of such a vehicle would come with “zero up-front cost to purchase for tax payers.”

The city council meeting begins at 5:00p at City Hall.
