Auburn will move forward with changes to an intersection at Seward Elementary School.
In an effort to increase safety for both drivers and pedestrians, Council voted Thursday to create a four-way stop at the intersection of Metcalf Drive and Mary Street as well as add crosswalks at the intersection, replacing the current crosswalk in the middle of Metcalf Drive. On-street parking will also be barred during student pick-up and drop-off times from 7:00-9:00a and 2:00-4:00p,
At a public hearing on the law held last week, Matthew House, a nonprofit located across the street from the school that provides a home for those with terminal illnesses to die with dignity, expressed concern about how the street parking changes may negatively affect their operations. The school district has since agreed to allow Matthew House to use its parking spaces when needed.
As part of its Capital Improvement Project, Seward is creating a new parking lot and student drop-off loop between the Pop Warner Football Field and the school’s west side. The loop’s exit will align with Mary Street.
Speaking on FLX Morning with Ted Baker, City Clerk Chuck Mason said the city anticipates having the stop signs in place in time for the first day of school. As for the district’s portion of the project, District Superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo said he anticipates all work at Seward Elementary to be completed in early fall.
