The Cayuga County Office of Tourism has won two awards from the New York State Tourism Industry Association.

Director of Marketing and Sales Claire Dunlap has received the Excellence in Young Professional Leadership Award.

“It was quite a shock,” Dunlap told Finger Lakes News Radio. “I did not know I was nominated so it was a big surprise to read my name in the press release when we got it the day before, and it was just wonderful. It felt very nice to be recognized by my colleagues, not only in my office but from around the state.”

Cayuga Tourism also received an award for Excellence in Tourism Equity & Inclusion for its efforts to increase diversity in its marketing as well as promote inclusivity within the county’s tourist destinations.

“We as an office have made a dedicated decision in the last almost four years to really make a change in our marketing and who we represent and the communities that we represent as well as the audiences we’re trying to bring to the destinations,” Dunlap continued. “We’ve done that in several different ways; we’ve followed a lot of the Travel Unity standards.”

Travel Unity is a nonprofit that helps tourism organizations become more equitable and inclusive destinations.

The Tourism Industry Association is a collection of tourism organizations and businesses seeking to promote tourism across the state.
