Cayuga County WIC Receives USDA Award for Breastfeeding Program

The Cayuga County Health Department’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program has been honored with an award from the United States Department of Agriculture.

The program is one of ten New York recipients of the USDA’s WIC Breastfeeding Gold Award of Excellence. Nationally, 82 awards were given in 2024.

The awards recognize the ongoing work WIC programs do to help mothers and children while breastfeeding. Cayuga County was recognzied as 27% of moms enorolled are fully or partially breastfeeding their children.

Cayuga County Public Health Director Kathleen Cuddy praised the breastfeeding team for their work.

“Breastfeeding has significant health benefits to both mom and baby. The WIC breastfeeding team has years of personal experiences, in addition to professional knowledge, which provides a tremendous amount of support to WIC participants during their breastfeeding journey.”

The Cayuga County WIC breastfeeding team works to provide one-on-one prenatal and postpartum support, education, and resources to mothers throughout Cayuga County.
