The Cayuga County Republican Party has announced its picks for this year’s elections.
Caleb Slater has received the endorsement for the 48th State Senate District. He hopes to secure the party’s nomination over fellow Republican Fanny Villarreal. If successful, he will face off against incumbent Rachel May, a Democrat, in the November election to represent Cayuga County and parts of Onondaga County.
In the State Assembly, Assemblymen Will Barclay, John Lemondes, and Jeff Gallahan have the committee’s support in their re-election bids.
Barclay represents the 120th Assembly District, including the three northernmost towns in Cayuga County – Victory, Sterling, and Ira.
Gallahan’s district, the 131st, meanders from Ontario to Chenango Counties. The district includes the Cayuga County Towns of Aurelius, Fleming, Genoa, Ledyard, Locke, Montezuma, Moravia, Niles, Scipio, Sempronius, Springport, Summerhill, and Venice.
Lemondes, whose 126th district includes the City of Auburn and the Towns of Brutus, Cato, Conquest, Mentz, Owasco, Sennett, and Throop in Cayuga County, is hoping to keep the seat he’s held since 2020. He is being challenged by Democrat Ian Phillips, who currently serves as president of the Auburn School Board. Both men have also received the support of their respective parties in Onondaga County where the rest of the district lies.
Congresswoman Claudia Tenney received the party’s endorsement as she looks to keep her seat representing New York’s 24th congressional district; however, proposed district boundary changes could see the county split between the 22nd and 24th districts. Due to this uncertainty, the Cayuga County Democratic Committee has held off on endorsing a candidate.
