Bimbo Bakeries in Auburn is closing its doors.

Citing a reduced capacity in the manufacturing network, the company announced it plans to close the facility on September 6, putting the careers of its 49 employees in jeopardy. At Thursday night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Jimmy Giannettino acknowledged the situation and stated that the city would help in any way it can.

“I think as elected officials this is one of our worst nightmares, not because of how it makes us look, but the fact that these are people we represent and they’re going to be struggling right now,” said Giannettino. “So, I want to reiterate that our hearts go out to them and if there’s anything we can do, we’re here to help.”

Giannettino also took the opportunity to clear up the notion that the city had prior knowledge of the closing. He claimed he did not receive any information from Bimbo Bakeries until earlier in the day on Thursday.

The company is also closing its facility in Olean in November.
