The City of Auburn has announced the completion of the $650,000 State Street repaving project.
Mayor Jimmy Giannettino, State Senator Rachel May, and city officials and staff were at the State Street bridge on Wednesday afternoon to mark the project’s completion.
Beginning on August 20, the project saw repaving work done on State Street (NY-38) from West Garden Street to Perrine Street and included the high-traffic area in front of the Auburn Correctional Facility.
The $650,000 project was funded through NYS Touring Route funding allocated to the city in the 2024-2025 state budget. Without this funding, and the support of Senator May, Mayor Giannettino said the project would not have been possible.
“The investment in the west side of our city is long overdue. We now have a greatly improved State Street in a high-traffic area in front of the Auburn Correctional Facility and north through Perrine Stree. We would like to recognize State Senator Rachel May. We brought this State Street repaving project to her attention and she supported us by fighting for the NYS Touring Route funding in the 2024-2025 State Budget. Without that specific funding, we would not have been able to do this work.”
The newly repaved portion of the street now features bike lanes to increase safety for cyclists. Mayor Giannettino told Finger Lakes News Radio that the idea came from the nearby Auburn Community Skateshop.
City Clerk Chuck Mason also expressed his support for this relatively new program.
“Thanks to Senator May and her colleagues in the State Legislature, this funding was established in the state budget. It represents a success story for infrastructure, the funding reaches cities like Auburn efficiently and promptly, allowing them to prioritize their projects. When the government achieves something positive, it should be acknowledged, and this relatively new state infrastructure program has proven highly effective.”
Touring Route Funding has been included in the last four state budgets.
The completion of this portion of State Street also represents the completion of work on the road from the recently rehabilitated State Street bridge to the northern city line. In 2023, NYS Touring Route funding was used to complete the section of State Street from Pulaski Street to the city line.
