The City of Auburn has been awarded nearly 10-million dollars to revitalize two properties within the city.
The money comes as part of the seventh round of the state’s Restore New York Communities Initiative.
8.5-million dollars will go to rehabilitate the former Bombardier Transportation Facility at 151 Orchard Street to attract supply chain companies interested in the area due to the nearby Micron facility in Clay. This project was selected as one of four special projects awarded for municipalities where a “highly visible and blighted property causes severe economic injury and has a depressing effect on the overall economic development potential of the community.”
At a press conference, Governor Hochul said “the City of Auburn, where I’ve been countless times, $8.5 million to renovate the former Bombardier community. If you’ve not been there, you need to go the Equal Rights Hall of Fame or the Equal Rights Welcome Center. It’s extraordinary. We’ve opened that a few years ago.”
1.12-million dollars will go to turn 22 East Genesee Street (next to Sam’s Shoe Service) into a mixed use facility with commercial space on the ground floor and residential units on the upper floors.
“These Restore New York grants will help to reimagine downtowns across our state and transform vacant, blighted and underutilized buildings into vibrant community anchors,” Governor Hochul said. “Thanks to a more than $146 million state investment, we are breathing new life into communities from Hudson to North Hempstead, jumpstarting new economic activity and helping ensure that New York State continues to be a place where people come to live, work and raise their families.”
Earlier this year, the city applied for 10-million dollars for the Bombardier property.
