The City of Auburn and Town of Owasco have new help in their fight to get the updated Owasco Lake Watershed Rules and Regulations adopted by the state.
At its Thursday meeting, Auburn City Council voted on a retainer agreement with Earthjustice, a law office specialized in environmental law.
Acting on a Pro Bono basis, the group will advocate on the city and town’s behalf to get the New York State Department of Health to repeal the existing Rules and Regulations for the lake and replace them with the Consensus-Based Rules and Regulations adopted by council in October of 2020.
The resolution passed Auburn City Council unanimously and Owasco has already signed on.
Councilor Jimmy Giannettino told his colleagues before the vote “I think it’s unfortunate that we’re at this point that we have to engage legal representation to fight for us and for what’s right for the people who drink water in Owasco Lake.”
