Auburn Officials Get Update on Micron

SHARE NOW

What’s the status of Micron’s planned expansion into Onondaga County?

Auburn City Council heard a presentation Thursday about the semiconductor manufacturer’s progress. Speaking on FLX Morning, City Clerk Chuck Mason summed up the presentation. He said there’s still work to be done before major construction begins.

“There’s still some environmental reviews and things that will be happening in 2024, a lot of stuff being taken care of before you start seeing construction up there, but everything is in the works and everything is underway and proceeding,” Mason said.

Cayuga County is expected to benefit significantly from the facility being built in Clay. Micron anticipates the facility creating 9,000 Micron jobs and 40,000 community jobs. Mason said the city anticipates many future employees choosing to live in Auburn and the surrounding area while commuting to the Clay location.

“We anticipate that there will be plenty of attraction of future Micron employees wanting to live in Auburn.”

With this in mind, Auburn is participating in a housing study being conducted by the CNY Regional Economic Development Agency.

Joe Nehme, Micron’s Senior Manager of External Affairs, told Council that the company hopes to complete the requisite environmental reviews and begin construction by the end of 2024.

While residents and officials patiently await updates on the manufacturer’s progress in completing the necessary steps to begin construction, residents can complete the Micron Community Engagement Committee’s survey to help identify community priorities for the semiconductor company to invest in such as education and housing. That survey can be completed online here.

Micron plans to build four labs in Clay, totalling 2.4 million square feet. When complete, the company hopes to take American semiconductor manufacturing from 2% to 16% of the global market.

The company currently has a facility in Manassas, Virginia.

The full presentation can be viewed on the city’s website.
