Could a new internet service provider soon set up shop in Auburn?
Geneva-based Community Broadband Networks America LLC provides internet, phone, and broadcast TV services to unserved and underserved communities. CBN is looking to lease space on the former radio tower at 85 Osborne Street in Auburn to set up equipment to provide its services to the community. The company expects Auburn would receive $750/month for leasing the space.
The City of Auburn acquired the tower due to tax foreclosure. Cell phone companies and 911 currently use the space for their equipment, similar to what CBN is planning.
The internet service provider will also work with the Auburn Housing Authority and other organizations to educate the community about the Affordable Connectivity Program, a federal program that can reduce internet costs for qualifying customers. CBN also says it will provide free internet to anyone in federal, state, or county-supported housing.
City Council will vote on whether or not to approve the proposal at its meeting this Thursday. If approved, the company says it can be up and running in approximately 60 days.
CBN gave a presentation to the council at last week’s council meeting; the full presentation can be found on the city’s website.
The internet service provider currently serves five counties and 16 cities, covering 30,000 households. These include Waterloo, Seneca Falls, Lyons, and Union Springs.
