History’s Hometown is now part of the Lafayette Historical Marker Trail.
With funding from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, the city of Auburn’s new historical marker is the 157th in the Lafayette Trail series.
June 8, 1825 is the actual date of Lafayette’s stop in Auburn. To celebrate the occasion, on Saturday members of the Auburn Masonic Lodge #124 and the Owasco Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held a re-enactment of the welcome speeches given to Lafayette on the actual spot. The new marker is located in the Exchange Street Plaza in downtown Auburn.

From the Pomeroy Foundation website: “We have provided grants to fund historic markers to celebrate the historic Farewell Tour in 1824 and 1825 of the General Marquis de Lafayette. At that time, Lafayette was invited to visit the United States for the first time in 41 years. As an American hero and one of the only surviving commanders from the Revolutionary War, Lafayette’s visit to the U.S. was highly anticipated and met with a great deal of enthusiasm and excitement. Lafayette’s Tour extended from 1824 to 1825, during which he visited Washington D.C., as well as major cities and small communities across 24 states.”
The City of Auburn Department of Public Works installed the marker which was obtained as a project of the Seward House Museum and The Lafayette Trail, Inc.
