A boat sank in more than 100 feet of water on Cayuga Lake after catching fire near Aurora on Monday.
The Aurora Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident with mutual aid from the Union Springs and Cayuga fire departments.
Aurora ambulance personnel were sent to evaluate the boat’s operator after the person reached shore. Water rescue crews searched the surrounding area for anyone who may have been in the water before beginning efforts to extinguish the fire.
The fire was contained to the vessel, which eventually sank in approximately 104 feet of water. Fire officials said only a minimal amount of fuel was released into the lake.
Crews removed major debris from the scene before returning to service. The Cayuga County Office of Emergency Services and Cayuga County 911 also assisted with the response.
